Our love for cars here at Toad Hollow is far from a secret, and we really enjoy expressing this in our photography.  Some projects take longer to schedule and complete than others do, and often this results in great photographs that reflect a personal experience.  We find this to be true in the case of our good friends Anibal and his wife Tracey who made the effort to come to Vancouver Island this summer to spend a wonderful afternoon with us as we photographed their incredible car, a gorgeous 1967 Jaguar E-Type Convertible.

Anibal and I have been in constant contact for well over a year as we have tried to find a suitable time to get together for the shoot.  As I am sure you can imagine, a car like this only makes outdoor appearances during the best weather in the summer, it’s far too special to take out in inclement conditions.  We were finally able to make this session work this summer of 2018.

It must be noted that over the years the Jaguar E-Type (also known as the XK-E) has taken on almost mythical proportions.  Car enthusiasts from all walks of life tend to agree it is one of the most profound designs of our time.  A famous quote from one of the industries demigods sums it up quite nicely:

“…the most beautiful car in the world…”
~Enzo Ferrari

The article we pulled this quote from goes on to note that the car has shown up repeatedly over the years in contemporary vernacular as a dream car to many famous people and publications.  The article also noted that Malcolm Sayer, the man responsible for several key design elements of the car, used secret mathematical formulas to calculate the ellipses that defined certain key styling cues.  How delightful and mysterious!

Further reading on the heritage behind the car can be found in these two interesting articles “The evolution of E‑Type as a racer” and “The Racing History of the Jaguar E-type“.  With all this in mind it is really easy to see why such well-known celebrities as Steve McQueen, Brigitte Bardot and Tony Curtis (just to name a few) have all owned and enjoyed motoring in one, and why shortly after the debut of the car in 1961 an E-Type was placed on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art where it remains today.

One of the most amazing things about spending an entire afternoon exploring a car like this visually with your camera is that every single angle reveals something stunningly beautiful to the eye.  As a matter of fact, if you check out the article “The 25 Most Beautiful Cars Ever Made” you may notice as we did that many of the cars on the list have very similar styling cues if you look for them.  It would seem that Jaguar made a truly timeless car with this beauty that stands the pure test of time inasmuch that it is constantly copied or used as a basis by other manufacturers in their own designs.  Oh, and by the way, the XK-E made it to #7 on that list!!  How great is that?

As we explore the archives of modern culture, don’t miss out on these two articles that feature the car: Forbes writes “Happy Birthday to the Jaguar E-Type, the Most Beautiful Car in the World” and Car and Driver’s original article on the XK-E from the December 1961 Issue “1961 Jaguar E-type“.  This car has to be one of the most written about and beloved cars in the history of modern automobiles.  And it bears stating again that after spending an entire afternoon with Anibal and Tracey’s Jaguar E-Type roadster, it’s truly easy to see why.

Now it’s time to dive into the pedigree of this particular car as we learn about the story behind how it came to be.  This particular tale takes us back to 1982 where it all really started.  Anibal had just graduated and was in process of making big life decisions we all face at this time in our lives.  He chose the car over a house, an event his father apparently believes was “the biggest mistake of Anibal’s life”.  But, really, some things in life truly transcend the earthbound notion of money.  For many young men, cars are definitely one of these things.  We think he made the right choice.

I know the fever that cars can create for some people having faced decisions like this many times in my life.  Fast forward a few years and a quick peek in our garage will find our beloved 1987 Corvette sitting there.  A wise investment??  Pah, I don’t think so.  A decision rooted in passion for cruising the back roads of the Cowichan Valley with the roof down as the blub-blub of the small block V8 taps the drumbeat that drives the wheels as the miles pass??  Most indubitably.

Back in 1982 when Anibal decided to find his dream car he put in quite the effort in finding it.  He finally found the perfect car for what seems to be a steal of a price in today’s market of $12,000.  But, as you would expect when you see the meticulous detail that has gone into it’s full restoration, that was just the very beginning.  Many years later with the full investment somewhere in the vicinity of $150,000 we see and enjoy the Carmen Red 1967 Jaguar that presents itself today.  And what a presentation!!

“The best thing I did was not buying that house,” he says reflecting back 35 years. “You have to follow your passion and this car has given me so much pleasure.”
~Anibal

Doesn’t that just sum things up nicely?

If you are interested, you can read the entire backstory and an in-depth interview on the history of this car on Driving.ca “Collector Classics: 1967 Jaguar XKE“.

As the sun swung around as the day progressed, the car took on a different personality with the sun glinting off the highly polished surfaces and revealing lines and curves that were simply sublime.  This car has personality and character in abundance, and the love and attention that has gone into the restoration shows.  The hours of the day ticked away as we talked about various cars, and the history and making of this particular Jaguar.  It was impossible to not notice that the entire day had passed, and that we had come away with the joys of a special experience along with what really does feel like lifelong friends in the making.  The underlying fabric that composes a true car enthusiast can traverse an entire universe, and we often truly enjoy a kinship that can only be experienced by highly passionate people who share our own fervor for beautiful art found in the design of remarkable cars.

The level of detail applied to the overall restoration does not stop with the terrific bodywork and refurbished interior, it also carries over into the engine compartment.  Once again, we find an area of the car that is in wonderful condition, especially when you consider that Anibal and Tracey drive it regularly, and the car is presented at car shows during the good weather months of the year.

As an avid car enthusiast, I am always drawn to the interior of a car as this is where the tactile impressions of the car are transmitted from the road through the suspension back up to the driver.  I have always wanted to take a close look at the switches and knobs found in the cockpit of a classic XK-E and was delighted to have a chance to really explore it all.  The steering wheel with it’s warm tones and wonderful wood rim is a true classic in terms of the automotive world, and really made this car stand out.

And, as always, we find the biggest treasures are to be found in the tiniest details.  The keys themselves are beautiful, forming the final piece of the puzzle when it comes to the overall impressions this car leaves you with.  As we wrapped our session up just as day was leading into night, I had a chance to follow Anibal as he made his way back to where Tracey awaited him, and seeing this car as it rolled down the highway, with the dulcet tones of the perfectly tuned straight 6 filling the air, I found myself marveling in the fact that this car is now well over 50 years old and seems timeless even today.  There are indeed many beautiful cars out there in the world, yet few leave the impression you have when seeing a real Jaguar E-Type Convertible in person.  These are the days that create the fabric that makes the tapestry of life.
