It’s hard to not become nostalgic when you see one of the classics on the road these days.  As time moves along these sightings are becoming more rare and in many ways seeing one at the local car show or at the drive-in is about the same thing as seeing a unicorn.  So you can well imagine our excitement when we reached out to a local friend of ours who has a gorgeous 1955 Chevrolet to photograph it, and we were invited over for the day.

The 1955 Chevrolet was a large character in the emerging hot rod scene at the time, and the car became a movie star in it’s own right starring in movies like “Two Lane Blacktop” (one of my personal favorite movies of all time) and “American Graffiti“.  The years 1955, 1956, and 1957 are widely known today as being a part of the Tri-Five collection of Chevrolets.  To us they are timeless beauties that have distinctive styling that sets them apart from pretty much every other car out there.

These cars have character, no mistake about it.  Each of the three years that makeup the Tri-Five collection have unique and highly distinctive styling cues.  Today, cars are designed over the couse of a considerable time-span and tend to not change very much between generations.  This is done to reduce costs as redesigning and retooling a factory is a time-consuming and expensive undertaking.  I guess back in the earlier times of car manufacturers this was much less of an issue.

For me, these classics take me back to a time when I was a young man roaming the streets of the city I called home.  We used to all congregate at a local parking lot as the sun set on those great summer nights, and some of us would drag race up and down the street.  I may have dated myself just there…  oops.

At any rate, any chance I get to spend time with cars of this era takes me instantly back to those times.  We find it impossible to not appreciate the subtle beauty of the lines of the body design, and when you hear the rumble of the Chevy V8 it’s just like that familiar song we all hear that instantly transports you to a time you reflect on fondly.

I also find that by-and-large people who own cars of this generation are all too happy to share them with anyone interested, as I discovered with our friend here.  It feels like a strong sense of camaraderie and a sharing of experiences from the times these cars were king of the proverbial jungle as soon as night fell.  It was a time when the city literally transformed itself, and these tire smoking champions took over.  Lifelong friendships were created that carry through to today, even when many of us have cut our hair and moved onto professional careers to take care of our families.  Alas, the hair may change, but you can never entirely remove the fever felt from just being near these cars.

There is no hands-free bluetooth, no in-cabin WiFi to be found here, only the raw power of a well tuned American V8 and the sound of tires desperately looking for traction as the light turns green.  The beautiful roar of the engine fills the air when throttle is applied, and that wonderful feeling is still to be found today for the true enthusiast.

Back in the day, these cars were a much more common sight than they are today, and it was the custom personalized touches that set each car apart.  They represented the personality and spirit of the owner, and for many of us a simple glance would yield instant recognition of a muscle-car compatriot that we have known all our lives.  It reveals an underlying sense of brotherhood and sisterhood that transcends mortal time.

Under the hood we find the true heartbeat of the beast, and a close look reveals a level of detail and customization that follows through on the entire car.  And even with the immaculate condition we find in this car, we learn that it is well loved and can be found prowling the streets on a regular basis.  Our friend tells us that it’s nearly impossible to go on a cruise without being hailed all over by people young and old alike.  It’s like a common bond, like a ribbon in time, that brings us all together.

Thanks very much for taking the time to visit us here at The Hollow today.  As always, we love to hear from all our visitors, so please feel free to leave us any comments you may have below.
