We have been working hard over the last nine months to obtain our commercial drone license with Transport Canada so we can offer aerial drone photography services to our clients.  This past weekend we received our first official SFOC to fly at Genoa Bay, a tiny marina community that is hidden deep in the Cowichan Valley.  The weather was picture-perfect, so to speak, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time piloting our drone around capturing a few photographs and a bit of video.

One of the first things that strikes us while we are airborne capturing imagery is that the change in perspective is truly amazing.  From an elevated perch, even if only elevated a small amount, the world takes on an entirely different look.  Scale becomes immediately evident as the horizon tends to now reach towards infinity, and here on Vancouver Island this provides unparalleled vantages and vistas that showcase the incredible beauty of the region.

Homes perched on the shore have outstanding views as the seasons and weather are constantly changing, and water traffic makes it’s way to and fro busily.  Those lucky enough to have personal pleasure craft take advantage of the incredible summer weather to enjoy the sunshine and warmth on the ocean, using the Genoa Bay marina as their home-base to a wide world of exploration.

The marina itself is quaint and intimate, providing a bit of respite from the day’s adventures as the cove provides cover from the open ocean.  Sitting on your deck here would be an amazing thing to experience as the sounds of the water lap upon the shores, and the sides of the boats and float-homes that pepper the marina.

We put together a brief video presentation here that includes a selection of still photographs and a bit of video we captured during our inaugural flight.  We are very excited to be able to include this service in our photography portfolio as we believe aerial imagery has many applications including tourism, advertising for businesses, inspection services and much more.  If you or someone you know might have need for photography or video of this nature we offer free consultations and would love to hear from anyone interested.  We can be reached easily via email at scott@toadhollowphotography.com, or call us directly to schedule and appointment and discuss your specific needs at 250-510-7693.

As always, we love to hear from all of our visitors to our site here, so please do feel free to leave us any comments or thoughts you may have below.  Thanks for visiting today!

This is awesome Toad. I’m dying to try my hand at drone photography and actually thinking of buying the new DJI Mavic. Gorgeous images.

    • Hi Edith, thanks for popping by! The DJI Mavic is an incredible aerial photography platform and if you do get one you’ll be delighted with the results. Best wishes on your adventure, we’ll be watching your sites for updates on this, that’s for sure!

Nice series – and congratulations on getting a drone licence. From what I hear, they’re becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

    • Thanks so much Frank, that truly means a lot to us! We’re very proud and excited to be flying now, it’s been quite the adventure in getting this far in the process. We can’t wait to apply this here and see what is possible for our valued clients!

    Congratulations on your license.
You surely captured some amazing views.
I look so forward to seeing more! 🙂

Sweet to hear about the drone and your license! I sold mine, flying without the license was a nuisance in my neck of the woods, good luck and have fun!

    • Thanks so much Michael! We are lucky here on the island inasmuch that there are quite a few places we can fly and photograph at, although the bigger cities here are off limits for now until we go for our complex license. We don’t mind the oversight, we really don’t want to be a problem in the air and want to be considered good “aerial citizens” in accordance with rules and guidelines. It has been quite the effort to get here, though, that I can tell you! Cheers my friend!!
