We’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the Toad Hollow Photography team today, “Bruce”.  Who’s Bruce, you may very well ask?  Bruce is a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone we recently acquired, giving us the ability to capture shots from a fresh, new perspective!  None of this would be possible without a special thank-you to one of our best friends Rich who has lent/sold us Bruce with the hopes we’d be able to put him in the sky to create images that just wouldn’t be possible otherwise.  Thanks so much, Rich!

I’ve been a fan of remote control things for many years now.  A few years back, Mrs. Toad bought me a pair of toy remote control helicopters that I used indoors…  with less than stellar results.  One ruined TV later, we came to the conclusion that those toys were meant for outdoor use only.  But, during this time I also realized that this would be a great platform for photography, allowing us to reach new heights and show-off our area and some of it’s features in a whole new way.

So, after reading the manuals, charging the batteries and coming up with a gameplan we decided to try it out in an empty field in downtown Duncan.  We didn’t climb very high to ensure safety, and made sure there were no people around us.

Our first subject was the new VIU building in town.  It’s a wonderful piece of modern architecture that features what is referred to as a “living roof“.  This is something that has fascinated us as a concept, and we really enjoyed seeing it from these new angles.  One day we may even put one on our house!!

As you make your way around the facility, various features become evident, all centric to the lifestyle and art-forms we enjoy here on the West Coast of Canada.  Totem Poles are found everywhere in our town and they weave into the normal visual tapestry seamlessly, showing locals and visitors alike a taste of our arts and culture.

Next we visited the Island Savings Centre, a terrific recreational facility that features a pool, a theater, an arena and a gym.  It is also home to our local hockey team, the Cowichan Valley Capitals.  As you would expect here in Canada, we are all very passionate about our hockey!  And no better place to share in the excitement than right here, at the hometown arena!

So let’s waste no further time, let’s enjoy these facilities from a new perspective!

Well, that was a ton of fun!  We can’t wait to show you more as we continue to play with our latest addition to the team, our beloved drone Bruce!  In the meantime, we thank you very much for your kind visit to The Hollow here today.  As always, we love to hear from all our visitors, so please feel free to leave us any comments you may have below.

  1. Modern and Contemporary in design are not one in the same, as many people might think. Modern design refers to a period of time, it is a design style that was created in the 1920′s – 1950′s. It doesn’t change, it is a defined style, and will remain such for ever. Contemporary design is ever changing.

I think you are using these words interchangeably and incorrectly.

    • Thanks for the clarification, Khürt, my background is in computers and photography, not architecture. We really appreciate your visit here today, and we hope you enjoyed the pictures! Hope to see you here again one day soon! Cheers. 🙂
