As we move into autumn, the throngs of visitors have quieted down as the seasons begin to make their change from the beautiful and warm summer we’ve had this year.  What once was a beach that was covered from end-to-end with happy vacationers and locals alike is now nearly empty, leaving you with a feeling that you’ve got this magical place all to yourself.  Such is Qualicum Beach and Parksville late in the year.

No matter what time of year you find yourself visiting the area, there is always something wonderful to take in.  Our most recent visit in October of this year found the beautiful Mrs. Toad and I exploring the region as the remnants of a large storm system made their way through.  The winds were whipping as rain fell, ranging from a gentle mist that seemed to envelope the very air we breathed all the way up to a driving rain the created large puddles to hop across.  This was the perfect time to head over to one of our favorite little restaurants in the area, “The Shady Rest“, where the terrific food is only rivaled by the incredible scenes you get to enjoy sitting waterfront as you dine.

After a truly delightful lunch we headed out to find a new adventure.  Within a few shorts blocks of the restaurant we found the above scene with a Great Blue Heron perched atop the remnants of an old wood pier.  It seemed to be huddled up as it awaited the storm to abate, turning the roiling skies back into the peaceful cloud cover that dominates at this time.  Heron’s are found in many locales here on Vancouver Island, and you are pretty sure to see them when you are near the ocean like this.  They are incredibly graceful birds that seem to have a presence all their own.  And, they make for great photography subjects, frequently posing and showing off in a way that only a heron truly can.

It goes to show that destinations like Qualicum Beach are terrific places to visit any time of the year.  If you are looking for warm temperatures and bright sunshine, make a point of heading here in the heart of summer.  If you prefer to have a place to explore on your own terms in times of quiet solitude, then you need to come here as the summer months wane giving way to the wonderful autumns, falls and springs that we enjoy here on Vancouver Island.

Thank you once again for taking the time to visit us here at The Hollow.  We love to hear from all our visitors, so please feel free to leave us any comments you may have below.

Just got back from co-hosting a Maine foliage tour that we held in the “off season” which turned out to be the peak foliage time. You are right that it is great when everyone is gone and it is so peaceful to explore and enjoy. Wonderful photo Toad.
