We’re constantly amazed by the things we discover in the Cowichan Valley. Our local services and offerings are becoming very well known on a broader scale with our attention to quality and detail. One of these industries is the burgeoning wine industry on Vancouver Island. Join us as we visit Paul and Cristina Brunner at the Blue Grouse Estate Winery today, one of the premiere wine makers on Vancouver Island.
Summer on the island this year has been wonderful. We’ve been graced with weeks of warmth and beautiful sunshine, and nothing has benefited more from this than the gorgeous grapevines that dot the countryside. The Cowichan Valley is referred to as the “warmland”, with micro-weather patterns creating temperate zones unique to the area. The gentle slopes of the landscapes here work perfectly for the production of exceptional grapes. This effect produces world-class wines that are gaining attention as some of the best produced today.
For years, the Cowichan Valley was primarily known for the rich farmlands and rolling hills and mountains. As the wine industry continues to grow, it’s quite common to find these wineries nestled amongst some of our incredible farms. If you look closely at the picture above, you can see one in the distance, providing a lovely pastoral neighbor for Blue Grouse Estate Winery and really showing off the incredible character of the area we love and call home.
As we strolled through the vineyard looking for compositions to capture, the grapes themselves became the ultimate star of the show with gentle backlighting accenting the incredible natural beauty that once harvested will be the source for the delicious vintages created here. Fall is just around the corner, and with it will come the time to harvest and produce the next batch of wines. Next year these vines will flourish with a new season of grapes, and the cycle will start all over again.
As we step into the tasting room, we find ourselves surrounded by rich, warm tones from the woodwork and the soft light glinting off the bottles on display. Warm smiles and knowledgeable staff are quick to greet you, creating the perfect atmosphere to try some of the wonderful wines and take in the ambiance, making for an unique experience that is so much more than simply buying a bottle of wine. A delightfully reasonably priced bottle of your favorite variety allows you to bring a bit of your experience home with you.
We were invited to visit the bottling and barrel room, and here you really begin to appreciate the attention to detail and the incredible efforts that master vintner Bailey puts into creating these fine wines. Meticulously maintained premises are the foundation of the winery, incredible care is practiced at every step and this comes shining through in the high quality vintages produced.
We’re thrilled to see this industry continue to thrive and grow here in the valley, and we really do encourage everyone who lives here or is planning a visit to the warmland to make a point of stopping by Blue Grouse Estate Winery to take in the experience yourself.
