When you think of fine wines, do you think of Vancouver Island?  If not, we’re here today to change that.  Our deep love for Vancouver Island is well-known, and even with our familiarity to all the best the island has to offer, we have just recently learned of the great wine industry that is growing and receiving critical acclaim from all over the world.

We’re delighted to introduce you to Cherry Point Estate Wines today at Toad Hollow Photography.  Nestled deep in the valleys of Cobble Hill, the Cherry Point vineyards are situated in the perfect spot to produce world-class wines.  The temperate climate of the island works in harmony with our soils to create the perfect setting, and Xavier and Maria Clara Bonilla take full advantage of that in the processes designed to create products that stand alone.

The vineyards are absolutely meticulous.  Using techniques designed to create the perfect grapes only natural and organic methods are used, producing consistent results that are above excellent.

I’ve always wanted to photograph oak barrels, they have great character in their wood and shape, and when you consider what they hold it’s hard not to get excited.  The barrels at the winery are most definitely photogenic, and they add a great element of old-world character to the beautiful setting they call home.

The grounds on the estate are absolutely breathtaking.  Creating the perfect complement to the vineyard and a lovely setting for the outdoor patio and Bistro, the grounds themselves are an oasis of beauty and peace.  On the day I visited for the photo-shoot, the sense of oneness with nature was almost palpable in the gardens.  The colors were vibrant, the flowers created splashes of wonderful tones everywhere you looked.  There really is no better or unique way to add to your Vancouver Island experience than by enjoying a beautiful glass of wine while your eyes take in the pastoral landscape.  It truly is an experience for all the senses.

The weather this year on the island is just picture-perfect.  Sitting in the outdoor patio at Cherry Point Estate Wines, you are immediately immersed into the entire experience as the modern world just outside the gates completely melts away.  Happy chatter fills the afternoon air, and any chance you might have to sit and chat a bit with Xavier and Maria is a time you won’t soon forget.  They are passionate about what they do, and this fine attention to detail shows in every aspect.

No visit to Cherry Point Estate Wines would be complete without stopping by the Tasting Room.  Created with an authentic feel with great wood tones and other fine details, a chance to stop and try some of the award-winning wines completes your visit.

The wines created here are definitely the star of the show, but they are also only the very beginning of the experience.  As a thank you for our visit this day, Xavier and Maria graciously gave us a bottle of Cherry Point Pinot Gris to enjoy at home.  The wine was absolutely delicious, full of rich character and flavors that express Vancouver Island’s character in a sip.  The time we spent with them was a real highlight of our summer so far, and we really can’t wait to head back for another visit, and of course to buy a bottle of some of the finest wine we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying.

So, if you didn’t previously think of Vancouver Island in terms of world-class wines, we hope that we’ve changed your mind here today.  A visit to Cherry Point Estate Wines is an entire experience, one that can turn an afternoon into a time of discovery and delight.

Toady you did a soldierly job of Cherry Point. I’m sure they’ll benefit from this promotional value and Im hoping that you might also get some monetary reward. Artists eat too. If not, a bottle or two will not go amiss.

  2. avatar Averil says:

You have done a grand job again! It looks so inviting. With all that fresh salt air I am sure the wines taste so delicious. There is only one problem. I didn’t see any cherries ;)

    • avatar ToadHollowPhoto says:

It’s an entire experience, Averil, if you come to the island you should definitely visit this wonderful spot! No room for cherries here as the winery has acres and acres of grapes on the go… down the street is another story, though, the entire Cowichan Valley is full of cherry trees!!

  3. avatar Edith Levy says:

What a beautiful winery. I must come visit…and maybe do a little tasting :) Thanks for introducing us to Cherry Point. You’ve captured it beautifully.

    • avatar ToadHollowPhoto says:

I can completely promise you that it would be a highlight for you, Edith! And of course, we’d finally have a chance to meet, and no better way to spend time with friends than by spending the afternoon in such a beautiful place enjoying the local wine! Thank you so much for your kind comments, my dear friend!

  4. It looks like a very nice place when passing by, which for me is a few times during most weeks. The photos you show us are gorgeous and make me realize that a visit there is long overdue. Just the reading is making me thirsty and tasting wine on a hot summer afternoon in these surroundings… Well, soon.

Joseph, you would enjoy it so very much, my friend, we guarantee it! Thank you so much for your kind visit and support here!

I am an avid wine drinker and I have never had a wine from your wonderful island. After reading your post and seeing your terrific images, I will have to see if I can find some wine from this winery. Great post Toad.

    • avatar ToadHollowPhoto says:

I cannot thank you enough for your kindness here, Len! If you can find a bottle of Cherry Point wine, it would well be worth the effort! Many thanks for your kind visit, good sir!

  6. There’s nothing better than spending an afternoon at a winery taking in the beautiful sights, and of course tasting the wines. Great images of this wonderful winery.

It was a new experience for us, one we will certainly be repeating that’s for sure! Thanks, Steven, that really means a lot to us here!

  7. avatar Jimi Jones says:

Oh how I would have loved this visit. Fascinating winery tour, Toad. Great series of shots and as always, wonderful write-up.

  8. avatar ehpem says:

Thanks for introducing me to this place Toad, and great shots as ever. I have not been there, though I am aware of the growing selection of wines from your area, and more recently also from the Saanich Peninsula.
That room with oak barrels stored in it is one place I would not want to be during an earthquake! It brings to mind recent photos from Italy of heaps of very large wheels of Parmesan that came off their shelving after tremor. This could be much worse. http://bit.ly/L6cHS5

    • avatar ToadHollowPhoto says:

Next time you guys are up this way you should really pop by, Ehpem, you’d love it! Thanks for taking the time to comment today! In the event of an earthquake I’d be trying my best to save all this delicious wine, no doubt about it!!

  9. I had never thought about Vancouver Island as a wine producing region although I do not know why as Oregon and Washington are well know for their excellent wines. If they are exported to the East Coast I will have to see what I can sample.

Great images and a perfect sales pitch for the Winery. I think they owe you a couple of bottles of their finest for this!

Thank you so much, Mark, that really means so much to us! We hope you find a bottle on your side of the country there and get a chance to try it yourself! :)
