It’s time again to rustle your hair in the wind as we head back to the 2012 “Vette to Victoria” event hosted by the Victoria Corvette Club last year.  It was a real highlight of our year to have a chance to join in on the fun over the long weekend as people from all corners of Canada and the US came together for the gathering.  It was a chance to see cars that are part of lore, almost like finding that unicorn in the forest, and a great chance to meet like-minded folks who are really passionate about their cars and what they mean.

As air travel was becoming a reality and NASA was just being formed, the movie “South Pacific” was huge and Elvis Presley and Billie Holiday came to prominence, the era of the car was dawning.  Our fascination with rockets and modern electronics were reflected back in the designs and details found in popular culture.  This red 1958-1960 Corvette C1 Roadster was part of this revolution, and today it still represents an icon of the times.  Almost all of us have seen photos or ads at some point of a happy couple making their way down the highway, the man with a big grin on his face and the lovely lady clutching her hair scarf as the wind buffets the passenger compartment.  The easy-going looks on their faces represented the dream for many, and as such over the years this car has taken on a larger-than-life persona.

The owners of this gorgeous car left no details untouched.  Every surface, every fine detail was attended to and if you look closely at the dashboard, you will see a surf board on display.  It’s these little touches that add something personal and really accent the feeling of nostalgia.

Here again, we take in the flowing lines of the body of the car.  Subtle and delicately rounded in just the right spots, the car looks a bit like a rocket, like a way to shed off the trappings of the mundane and head out onto the highways and byways where untold adventures await.  It was a symbol of ultimate freedom.

As the morning continued to unfold around us, the scope of the event was becoming clearer to us.  All generation cars were represented here, and almost everyone came prepared with chairs, coolers, picture albums and a myriad of other things that pertain to shows like this.

Oh Man that Red Vette! I love the shot from behind with shallow DOF! It really makes the car stand out! They don’t seem to make them like they used to!
