Admiring Boats

Today’s post finds us back at the Genoa Bay Marina, on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.  Being that we live on an island, marinas and nautical things in general are to be found everywhere.  This gives us countless subjects to enjoy and photograph to share with everyone.  The smaller marinas like Genoa Bay also seem to have a higher percentage of classic and wooden boats to take in, and this is where our true love of all things nautical lies.

Without a doubt, my personal favorite classic boats are all made by Chris-Craft.  The woodwork and attention to fine detail make these boats stand on their own.  This cruiser is one fine example of such.  In near immaculate condition, this multi-purpose vessel can be enjoyed in any number of ways.  All of them include sitting back on a comfy chair on the deck, perhaps with a delicious beverage in hand, enjoying the sights and sounds of marina life.  In this shot in particular, the reflection off the side of the boat from the gentle lapping of the ocean in the marina really added a huge element of interest for us to enjoy.

During the summer, no scene is more reminiscent of island living than this one.  Some boats are missing from their piers, undoubtedly out in the wide sea enjoying the weather and company of friends and family.  Some folks come to park their boats in the marina, and just take in all the life that surrounds this wonderful and peaceful place.  In this shot, you can see someone sitting on the front portion of the boat, with a nice book and a glass of something cold…  I cannot think of a nicer way to pass some time, can you?

This is one of my personal favorite shots from the Genoa Bay Marina visit.  Slightly abstract in nature, we really get to enjoy the colors and details on this boat.  The combination of the yellow and green on this gorgeous classic wooden vessel were really wonderful to take in, and was contrasted with the shiny chrome smoke stack.

Once again, our 50mm prime lens really takes in all the textures and details possible in this scene.  In this shot, the textures of the wood, the painted word “Raven”, and the crisp and sharp details evident in the rope tying this gorgeous boat to the pier really produced something we found utterly striking.

We really hope our post here today was able to give you a true sense of what it’s like to visit this wonderful marina on a gorgeous summer island day.  A gentle breeze rolls in from the ocean and makes for walking the piers, meeting folks and taking in all the sights a real joy.  This visit was definitely a highlight of our summer.

We do have more images and posts to share from the marina, so if you’ve been following along and enjoy this series we really hope you stay tuned!  Thanks so kindly for your visit, it really means so much to us here.  Please do feel free to leave us any comments you may have as we love to hear from all our visitors.

Another great series of the marina Toad. Just fabulous photos. The reflections of the water on the hulls of the boats are excellent as well as the reflections in the boat windows. Great composition and colors all around.

I also want to thank you for mentioning two of my photos in your Light Stalking post. I really appreciate your support.

    • Thank you so much for your kind comments and your visit today, Len, it means a lot to us! No worries at all in being included in our running weekly contribution to LightStalking my friend, we pick the best we find, and your work most certainly qualified in that arena! Thanks again, Len, we sure do appreciate it.

Nice shots Toad! I really like the first shot and how the light plays off the side of the boat. Looks cool.

  3. Beautiful. You’re right the detail is outstanding.

  4. What a great series of images. I especially like the last two that focus on the details that make nautical photography so wonderful.

  5. I love the dancing reflections on the sides of the boats. You can almost feel the boats rocking in the marina. Your post processing seems to be evolving a bit Toad; the rich, saturated colors are just yummy!

    • I am going through a bit of a change, I’m honored that you’ve noticed! With summer here, a lot of our shots really do well with a touch more coloring to reflect what we really see here on the Island. Thanks so very much Barbara, that’s really kind of you my friend!
