In a rapidly evolving world, we love old customs, history and heritage. There’s something distinct and character-filled in historic artifacts with some of our very favorite being our local buildings here on Vancouver Island. The West Coast of Canada was definitely a big part of early Canada and contributed a lot to the countries growth. Today we explore the original Custom House in Victoria, BC.
Originally built in 1875 it was one of the very first federal buildings constructed in BC. Today it’s home to several businesses, and a plaque out front notes that in 1987 it was designated a federal heritage site. It remains in wonderful condition today.
I love the brickwork and the details in the roof in this shot. The heritage lamp-post out front adds an element of nostalgia to the overall scene, and the inner harbor in the background adds a wonderful backdrop. The almost pastel pink shade of the building is really quite typical for the older buildings in town. It really adds a sense of optimism to the setting.
This is definitely my favorite image from this series. On this side of the building we’re able to clearly see two windows in the attic area; the other side has no such windows. I can’t help myself but wonder what it must be like inside! This is such a typical scene in downtown Victoria on a bright day. I also really love the addition of the pedestrian walking through, adding a sense of life.
In this image, we’re really able to take a closer look at the wonderful stone and brick work that comprises the structure of the building. It’s hard to believe this building is well over 130 years old now, it truly is in a fantastic state. We have quite a few more buildings of this nature on our radar to capture and bring to everyone, please do stay tuned!
Many thanks for your visit today, we really appreciate it. Please feel free to leave a comment as we love to hear from our visitors!
