“Viking Grocery” – The Toad Needs Vittles

On the outskirts of a little town on Vancouver Island called Chemainus, lies an abandoned grocery store.  This bright blue store was one of our favorite stops when visiting Chemainus, we’d pop in for a beverage or an ice cream every time we came to town.  Chemainus has been hit hard by the economy and signs of financial strife are everywhere with buildings for sale and lease.  I was a little surprised to come into town one day a while back and find the store had been closed and nailed shut.

Quite a bit of time has passed since the For Sale signs went up and judging by the look of things, it doesn’t appear a new suitor is imminent.  The general condition of the building continues to deteriorate, as evidenced by the back area behind the store.

The colors and textures presented by this scene made for a perfect subject of HDR photography, I believe.  The overhang by the back door is covered in moss and is falling down, slowly.  It’s only a matter of time before the entire facility starts to be reclaimed by nature herself.

The entire 5 picture gallery of Viking Grocery can be found on our online gallery.  We hope you enjoyed viewing the images we’ve posted today, and many thanks for your visit and support!

It’s a sad thing to see these old road stops drying up, but they do make for good imagery. Moss on the overhang…interesting. Nicely done!

    • I totally agree Jim. On one hand, I really don’t like to see places and things that we used to count on being there now sitting in a state like this. On the other hand, it’s photographic gold, isn’t it? LOL

Thanks for viewing and commenting my good friend! 🙂

  2. Very fine work capturing the mood of this delapidated structure!
